It’s been quite a week in Sunday Surprise head quarters. More so on what HASN’T happened vs what has.

Firstly, THANK YOU to the very first PAID subscriber of this newsletter! And for those who emailed/messaged when the last edition was sent. It’s nice to see that people are reading and supporting this project. Depending on the scale, I’ll see if I can set up a regular charitable donation using those funds.

As always, drop me an email or a message and please do share the newsletter with your friends if you find something useful!

I’m glad that I established this 1 hour rule for this newsletter. Means I am procrastinating a lot less and “getting on with” writing it. It may have something to do with a book I’m re-reading, but more on that below…

Weekly update

This week has been notable for me mainly because of how much time I had to catch up on things.

My company on this otherwise lazy week.
  • First week where due to on-call, leave (both mine and surgeons away) and public holidays, I didn’t work a single day in public and essentially worked 50% of normal! This week felt luxurious!

  • Managed to catch up on a few projects that I’d left hanging. It’s really nice to have the time to power through some quick tasks that have built up over time

  • Spent time with the folks before they went off on some travels. I never thought I’d be jealous of my parent’s adventures (since they hardly like going anywhere) but so far they’re really out there exploring!

  • Slept. It has been SO good to have naps all over the place. Shocking for my sleep hygiene, but AMAZING to be able to do.

  • Catch ups and visits - there were a few catch ups and people visiting from interstate too. That’s why even with less work, it hasn’t felt like an empty week.

I think I’ll keep this to dot points and expand on the blog. Not every week will get an entry however, but I’ll leave the link there in case you’re curious…

Project updates

  • randInt podcast S04E06 - Burnout Recovery - This was something we wanted to do since last year: talk about recovering from burnout and what has worked for us. In typical randInt style, it never happened til now. Apologies for some of the bad audio interspersed - the internet is shocking in WA!

Books/Articles/Videos

I’ve been on a bit of re-read/re-listen/re-watch phase lately. Instead of trying to find new things, I’m going back through old books that made an

impact. Currently its…

  • Four Thousand Weeks - Oliver Burkeman*

    • In the world of self-help and time management, this book was quite a refreshing read. Instead of focussing on how to squeeze more and more into an already overwhelming day, the book focusses on being realistic with your expectations. I’m listening to the audiobook which is read by the author and you can hear in his voice that he’s tried the other advice before coming up with his own.

Cool finds

  • Denon Perl Pro* - My favourite earbuds, the Nura True Pro, went out of stock since the company was acquired by Masimo, the makers of Denon. It was SO pleased to see that they didn’t kill the product line but relaunched the buds as the Perl Pro. They’re not cheap but boy do they sound good! The auto- sound customisation technology was developed right here in Melbourne by an ENT surgeon!

  • Email attachments directly to Dropbox - If you haven’t opened a Dropbox account yet, use this link to get bonus storage for both of us*. One of the most useful features is setting up email to Dropbox: essentially you get an email address and anything email with an attachment you send there gets saved to your specified folder! I have been using this little trick for a while now and it’s a very easy way to not loose attachments and files in the depths of the inbox vortex.
